Chemistry · Chapter 20

The Carbonyl Families

One group, C=O, and four families. Compare them, climb the oxidation ladder, build an ester from an acid and an alcohol, and work out the pH of a weak acid at any strength you like.

The structure teal ring marks the carbonyl carbon

The carbonyl compound on screen

An aldehyde keeps a hydrogen on the carbonyl carbon, and that hydrogen is what lets it oxidize further.

What you are looking at

ethanal aldehyde
Formula
C2H4O
Molar mass (g/mol)
44.05
Boiling point
20.2 °C
Common name
acetaldehyde

Oxidizes easily to the matching carboxylic acid.

What is happening
Four families, one group
The C=O group is shared by all four. What sits next to the carbonyl carbon decides the name, the smell and the chemistry.

How acidic is it?

Only a small share of the molecules hand over a proton, which is what makes these weak acids.
