Chemistry · Chapter 5

Energy In, Energy Out

Push heat and work across the wall of a gas cylinder. The arrows, the piston and the running total of ΔE = q + w all move together, so every sign has somewhere to show up.

The system and its surroundingsmove the sliders

SURROUNDINGS SYSTEM: the gas inside q = +0 J no heat moving w = 0 J piston still −400 J +400 J ΔE = 0 J

Live numbers

+0J balanced
q+0
w0
ΔE = q + w+0

Slide q to the right and heat flows into the gas. Slide it left and heat leaves. Slide w to the left and the gas expands, spending energy on the air outside.

What you are seeing

AT REST
Nothing crossing the wall
Both sliders sit at zero, so the gas keeps the energy it had.

Signs always describe the system. Energy coming in counts as positive. Energy going out counts as negative. Add the two and you have the change in internal energy.
