Chemistry · Chapter 1

Float, Sink and Switch Scales

Set a mass and a volume, then drop the block into four different liquids. Below that, one temperature slider drives all three scales at once, so you can see where they agree.

The beaker the block sinks to its own level

A block floating or sinking in a chosen liquid
Liquid in the beaker

Three scales, one temperature

Fahrenheit, Celsius and kelvin lined up at the same temperature

Density of your block

2.70g/cm³ sinks
The arithmetic: 54.0 g ÷ 20.0 cm³
Fraction under the surface: fully submerged
Closest common material: aluminum
Mass of liquid pushed aside: 20.0 g

Controls

54.0 g
20.0 cm³

Temperature readings

25.00°C room
In kelvin: 298.15 K
In Fahrenheit: 77.00 °F
Add 273.15 to go from Celsius to kelvin.
Why it floats or sinks
Denser than water, so it sinks
A floating object sinks until the liquid it pushes aside weighs as much as the object does.
