Maternal-Newborn & Paediatric Nursing · Chapter 13

The Arithmetic That Keeps a Child Safe

Every paediatric order is a calculation, and the nurse is the last person who can catch the error before it reaches the child. Three habits prevent most harm: the weight is in kilograms and measured, every dose is checked against the safe range per kilogram, and every dose is then compared with the maximum adult dose — because the adult ceiling always wins. Work the doses, run the 4-2-1 rule, decide who may do what, and match the tool and the words to the child.
