A fetus runs a circulation built around a placenta. In the first minutes of life the lung aerates, pulmonary resistance collapses, the cord is clamped and three shunts shut — and every one of them can reopen. Drive the circulatory switch through five states, then run the golden minute decision by decision, and finish on the saturation targets that tell you a pink newborn at one minute is the exception, not the goal.

Assessment and intervention run at the same time. Nothing here waits for a score to be written down.
Targets are the chapter’s: about 60–65% at 1 minute, 70–75% at 3 minutes, 80–85% at 5 minutes and 85–95% at 10 minutes.
