Every dose from here forward is expressed per kilogram, because the patients on the other side of the birth are newborns and children, and children are not small adults. This bench does the arithmetic in front of you, applies the adult maximum, and lets you check the calculated dose against the dose on the order — then moves to the other numbers of the metabolic antepartum unit: screening thresholds, pregnancy glucose targets, and the safety calls that go wrong quietly.
Choose your bench
The rule that prevents the most dangerous paediatric error: a weight-based dose must always be checked against the maximum adult dose, and the smaller number wins. A large adolescent is not entitled to a larger-than-adult dose simply because the multiplication says so.
Step one — 50 g glucose challenge
Step two — 100 g three-hour test
75 g two-hour test
Self-monitored values at home
Screening happens at 24 to 28 weeks, earlier if risk factors are present. Glycaemic targets in pregnancy are tighter than outside it.
