Reading the Fetus We Cannot See

We cannot see the fetus, so we infer its oxygenation from its behaviour. Read six real-shaped tracings and decide what each deceleration is — the shape and the timing against the contraction decide it, and the label decides the action. Then score a non-stress test, a biophysical profile and a contraction stress test against the chapter’s criteria, and finish by running intrauterine resuscitation in the order that actually restores oxygen.

The tracing is on the right. Upper channel is the fetal heart rate, lower channel is uterine activity. Decide what the pattern is before you decide what to do.
