Exam Logic and Red Flags Lab

Sort a population into a 2x2 table and watch predictive values move with prevalence, practise the accuracy calculations, sort warning signs and exam tests, and reason through clinic scenarios with fictional adults. Exam tests are described by the tissues they load, not as instructions. Nothing here is graded.

Part 1: 2x2 Accuracy Simulator

Teaching model200 people are tested. Prevalence decides how many truly have the condition; sensitivity and specificity decide how their test results fall. Counts are rounded to whole people, so the percentages are rounded too. Preset test values are rounded figures from published studies, which vary widely.

MeasureValue

How the model works: of 200 people, prevalence × 200 have the condition (solid dots). Sensitivity × that number test positive (true positives); the rest are false negatives. Specificity × the people without the condition test negative (true negatives); the rest are false positives (rings in the positive row). PPV = TP ÷ (TP + FP), NPV = TN ÷ (TN + FN), LR+ = sensitivity ÷ (1 − specificity), LR− = (1 − sensitivity) ÷ specificity. The curves show PPV and NPV across prevalence for the current test.
