Endocrine Terms and Documentation Lab

Break the thyroid feedback loop at different levels and read the lab pattern, practice endocrine word parts, abbreviations and safe charting without limit, race the clock sorting terms, and work through chart scenarios with fictional adults. Nothing here is graded.

Part 1: Feedback Loop Explorer

Teaching modelA simplified thyroid loop. Lab values are illustrative; typical reference ranges used here are TSH 0.4 to 4.0 mIU/L and free T4 0.8 to 1.8 ng/dL, and every laboratory sets its own.

How the model works: the hypothalamus sends TRH to the pituitary, the pituitary sends TSH to the thyroid, and the thyroid sends T4 to the body. Free T4 brakes the pituitary and hypothalamus (negative feedback). When the thyroid itself fails, the brake weakens and TSH climbs. When the pituitary or hypothalamus fails, TSH cannot climb, so T4 falls with a low or normal TSH.
