Infection and Stewardship Walkthrough

Contact: gown and gloves. MRSA, VRE, ESBL, CRE, C. difficile (plus soap and water), scabies, draining wounds.
Droplet: surgical mask. Influenza, pertussis, Neisseria meningitidis, group A strep pharyngitis, mumps. Mask the patient for transport.
Airborne: fit-tested N95 or PAPR and a negative-pressure airborne infection isolation room with the door closed . Tuberculosis, measles, varicella, disseminated zoster. Only immune staff enter measles and varicella rooms.

Watch cytokines turn an infection into findings you can see, fill blood culture bottles the right way, read a lab panel and an ANC, match each antibiotic class to the monitoring its mechanism demands, narrow therapy at the 48 to 72 hour time-out, choose the right precautions, and follow skin, bone, valve and chronic infections from first sign to discharge teaching.
