Building the Window

Between about 1400 and 1430 the picture stopped being a gold surface and became a window. That change was technical before it was philosophical. Start with the flat gold panel, then switch on one invention at a time — a single vanishing point, a fixed viewer, oil glazing, a single light source, a shifted weight — and watch exactly what each one buys you.

Perspective is a convention, not simply “how we see.” It assumes one motionless eye, no binocular disparity and a flat picture plane. It became so dominant that Europeans came to call it realism — which says more about the persuasiveness of a well-taught technique than about optics.
