Patterns of Intergroup Relations

When a dominant group and a minority group share one society, the relationship is not improvised each morning — it settles into a pattern. Sociologists name six of them and lay them on a continuum running from intolerance to acceptance: genocide, expulsion, segregation, assimilation, amalgamation, pluralism. The same society can run different patterns toward different groups at the same time, and it can slide along the line in either direction. Tap the continuum to watch what each pattern does to the groups — then sort twelve cases.
