Alveoli Under Attack

When the air sacs fill up or collapse · Week 12
Oxygen has to cross from the air sac into the blood. That crossing is diffusion. If the sac fills with fluid or pus, or if it collapses, the oxygen cannot get across. These are the diseases that block diffusion. Click each one and watch whether O₂ makes it into the blood.

One air sac and its capillary

The air sac is on top and the blood vessel is below. Watch to see if the red oxygen dots can cross into the blood.

What's happening

Same end result, different causes: pneumonia fills the sacs with pus from an infection, usually in one area. Pulmonary edema fills them with watery fluid when the heart backs up. ARDS floods both lungs with inflammatory fluid, often after sepsis or trauma. Atelectasis collapses them, from a blockage or after surgery. Every one of them blocks diffusion, so oxygen falls and you get hypoxia. When you listen, you would hear crackles.
