Acute Kidney Injury

Pre-renal · Intra-renal · Post-renal. So where is the problem? · Week 11
AKI is a sudden drop in kidney function. The fastest way to sort out the cause is location. Is the problem before the kidney (not enough blood in), inside the kidney (damaged tissue), or after the kidney (urine cannot get out)? Click each one to see where it breaks.

Follow the flow: blood in → kidney → urine out

The hurt zone lights up red. Everything else is working fine.

Phases of recovery

No matter how AKI starts, recovery tends to move through three phases:

1 · Oliguric

<400 mL/day. Waste builds up → ↑ BUN & creatinine, plus fatigue and feeling unwell.

2 · Diuretic

2–4 L/day. Urine pours out → risk of dehydration & low BP. BUN and Cr level off.

3 · Recovery

1–2 L/day. GFR improves. BUN and Cr flatten, then fall back toward normal.
