The Three Outcomes of Complement

About thirty blood proteins make up the complement system. Whichever pathway switches it on, it all funnels through one molecule, C3, and delivers just three weapons. Step the cascade through, then change the target and knock out a protein to see which weapon is lost.

Keep the fragments straight. C3b binds and coats, which is opsonization. C3a and C5a call in the crowd, which is inflammation. C5b through C9 build the MAC that punches holes, which is lysis.
