The Smear Descriptor Desk

Every red-cell disease is described in the same two dimensions — how big the cells are and how much hemoglobin they hold — plus two more for uniformity and shape. Turn the four dials, watch the smear redraw, and read the report phrase assemble itself out of micr/o, chrom/o, anis/o, poikil/o, spher/o and drepan/o. Then switch to Match the case and set the dials from a patient’s history alone.
Cell size · the -cytic half of the phrase
Hemoglobin content · what “colour” really measures
Size uniformity · are they all the same size?
Shape · the smear’s most specific clue
A normal smear is normocytic, normochromic — right size, right colour. Move one dial at a time and read what changes in the phrase.
