The Milestone Bench: Place It, Flag It, Approach It

The sequence of development is fixed; the rate is individual. That single sentence is what separates the parent who needs reassurance from the child who needs a referral — and you can only tell them apart if you know where each milestone actually sits. Drop milestones onto the timeline, then sort genuine red flags from normal variation, then pick the approach that a toddler, a preschooler, a school-age child and an adolescent each require, because developmental theory only earns its place in nursing when it changes what you do.
