Maternal-Newborn and Paediatric Nursing · Chapter 2
What, and Exactly When
When a patient asks whether an exposure has harmed the pregnancy, two questions decide the answer: what, and exactly when. Slide the exposure along the critical-window chart and watch which structures are under construction at that moment, then take five real calls where the right answer changes with the week. A structure can only be malformed while it is being formed.
Place the exposure
6 weeks
Gestational weeks — counted from the first day of the last menstrual period, the way you will chart it. The post-conception week is two lower and is printed on the tile at the top right.
Each agent below carries the chapter’s own risk window. Watch the label that says which clock the window was written in — a window quoted in post-conception weeks and read as gestational weeks is a two-week error in the direction that matters.
