The Claim Workbench

Narrow claims are provable but risk being unimportant; broad claims are important but unprovable. The craft is finding the narrowest claim that still matters. Slide the scope controls, attach a because-clause, decide whether to state the stakes, and pick a qualifier — the sentence rebuilds live and the dot on the right moves between the two failure corners.

Provable vs. worth proving

Scatter plot. Horizontal axis: how provable the claim is. Vertical axis: how much it matters. The shaded band in the upper right is the usable zone. TOO BIG TO PROVE TOO SMALL TO MATTER USABLE Provable with the evidence you can gather → Matters to a reader →
Note: the chapter counts four narrowing axes — population, place, time and aspect. Place and time share one control here. Two of the four is usually enough; all four at once shrinks a claim into triviality, which is the opposite failure.
