Ross’s Duty Scale

Ross held that duties are real, plural, and genuinely in conflict — and that no master rule ranks them. Weigh the competing prima facie duties in each case, watch the beam settle on a duty proper, and read what residue you still owe the duty that lost. Then try to replace your judgment with a fixed ranking and see what happens.

The proposalCritics say Ross’s intuitionism is a shrug: it names seven duties and then refuses to order them. So order them. Set a permanent weight for each duty, and the machine will apply that single ranking to all five cases — in both a mild and a grave version — without any further judgment from you.
