English uses one word where medical anthropology needs three. Disease is the malfunction a clinician can find; illness is what the sufferer and the family actually live through; sickness is what the society has already decided about the condition before either party walks in. Most of the time all three point the same way, which is why the distinction stays invisible. Plot ten cases where they come apart.
