MicroQuest

The Outbreak Lab

By Dr. Akash Garg
Pixel art clinical microbiology lab at Grand Rounds Memorial, with lab benches, incubators and a biosafety cabinet, and a glowing many headed Superbug looming over the specimen benchTen Superbugs. One outbreak. Real microbiology.

Your lab scientist

How to play
  1. You are the new clinical lab scientist at Grand Rounds Memorial. Seven patients on the Medical ICU have infections that usual antibiotics are not touching, and the lab has to find out why.
  2. Walk with the arrow keys or WASD. Talk and use with Space or E. On a phone, drag the pad and tap A.
  3. Ten stations line the lab halls. At each one, help three staff members with real bench work: focus a microscope, run a Gram stain, pick media and read colonies, count plates, run biochemical tests, measure Kirby-Bauer zones, read gels and ELISA plates. A wrong answer shows the worked solution and you keep going.
  4. Then open the containment door and duel the station's Superbug, a personified pathogen. Right answers drain its 8 HP (fast bench work is a Critical insight). Wrong answers cost one of your 3 hearts.
  5. Win to earn a Proof card and an Outbreak Clue. The Specimen Processing and ID Bench opens after 6 stations are proven. That is where the outbreak is solved.
  6. The Field Guide is your study guide. Every chapter is open from the start, in the game and on paper, along with identification flowcharts and a precautions reference.
  7. Your progress saves on this device. Print a report any time from the Report button.
